Stump Grinding & Root Removal overview
A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a termite and fungus magnet, a mower-killer, and a sprouting nuisance that sends up suckers for years. We grind stumps and exposed roots several inches below grade so you can put that space back to work.
What's included
- Stump grinding 4-12 inches below grade, depending on your plan for the spot
- Surface and buttress root chasing where roots lift walkways or patios
- Grindings raked back to fill the hole, or hauled off and topped with soil
- Access-friendly machines for gated backyards and HOA lots
- Sucker-prone species (elm, cottonwood, tree of heaven, mesquite) ground deep
- Clean, level finish ready for sod, gravel, a footing or a new tree
The Case For Keeping Up On It
Why Not Just Leave The Stump
- Pests. Decaying stumps draw termites, carpenter ants and wood-boring beetles right up against your fence, deck or home.
- Regrowth. Many Arizona species resprout from the stump and roots. Grinding kills the crown and stops the sucker cycle.
- Hardscape damage. Living roots keep expanding after the tree is cut, cracking flatwork and lifting pavers.
- Usable space. You cannot build, plant or cleanly landscape over a stump. Grinding turns dead space back into yard.

Good To Know
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep do you grind?
Standard is 4-6 inches below grade for lawn or gravel. If you are planting a new tree or pouring concrete we go deeper, typically 10-12 inches, and chase the major roots.
Do you remove the roots too?
We grind surface and buttress roots that cause problems - lifting walkways, fences or patios. A full root-system excavation is possible on larger jobs and is quoted separately.
Can you get into my backyard?
Usually yes. We run machines that fit through a standard 36-inch gate. Send a photo of your access when you request an estimate and we will confirm.
What do you do with the wood chips?
Your choice - rake them back to fill the hole (they settle over a few weeks) or haul them off and finish with topsoil.
