Prescott
Prescott sits a mile high in the ponderosa pines, right up against the Prescott National Forest. That is beautiful, and it is also a serious wildfire setting. Big established trees around the older neighborhoods, steep lots up on the Country Club side and Mount Vista, decomposed-granite soil, and hard monsoon storms that break limbs off anything that has not been kept up.
Prescott page →Prescott Valley
Prescott Valley is high-desert grassland and juniper, not pines - a different setting than Prescott just up the road. Most neighborhoods are newer, master-planned, and run by an HOA, so the landscaping has to stay inside the rules. The trade-off out here is fast-moving grass fire and steady wind that finds every weak and dead limb.
Prescott Valley page →Chino Valley
Chino Valley properties run bigger and more rural than the in-town lots down in Prescott. Big cottonwoods and Siberian elms along the drainages, juniper spread across grazing land, open grass that cures out and carries fire fast, and steady wind that finds every weak limb and dead top.
Chino Valley page →Dewey-Humboldt
Dewey-Humboldt runs from the newer homes along Highway 69 out to old ranch land and river property on the Agua Fria. Juniper, scrub oak and mesquite on the hills, cottonwood and willow down low, and a real wildfire exposure anywhere a home backs up to open land.
