Fire Mitigation & Defensible Space

Defensible space to Firewise standards — done by firefighters. Family & Firefighter Owned & Operated. Licensed, insured and HOA compliant.

Fire Mitigation & Defensible Space overview

We are firefighter owned, and this is the work we care about most. Northern Arizona's ponderosa, chaparral and juniper country burns - the only question is how prepared your property is when it does. We create and maintain defensible space so embers and creeping fire have nothing to catch on near your home.

What's included

  • Zone 0-2 defensible space assessment and clearing (0-5 ft, 5-30 ft, 30-100+ ft)
  • Ladder-fuel removal - limbing trees up 6-10 ft, breaking the path from grass to canopy
  • Brush and chaparral thinning to recommended spacing; manzanita and scrub oak
  • Juniper removal and thinning
  • Dead, dying and diseased tree removal
  • Pine-needle, leaf-litter and slash cleanup from roofs, gutters, decks and yard
  • Firebreak and fuelbreak cutting on acreage, fence lines and access roads
  • Ongoing seasonal maintenance so the property stays cleared year over year

The Case For Keeping Up On It

Why Defensible Space Is Not A One-Time Job

  • Fuel grows back. Grass, brush and needle cast rebuild your fuel load every single season. Firewise clearance done once and ignored is gone in two years.
  • Insurance is watching. More Arizona carriers now inspect for defensible space and a non-combustible Zone 0. Maintained clearance helps you keep - and sometimes lower - coverage.
  • It protects the whole street. Embers travel more than a mile ahead of a fire front. Your cleared lot is a firefighting anchor point; a neglected one endangers the neighbors.
  • Crews will not stage at an indefensible home. Firefighters triage. Clear access, limbed trees and a non-combustible perimeter are what let them commit to saving a structure.

How We Work

Straightforward, Start To Finish

Step 1

Zone assessment

We walk the property against Firewise and Arizona defensible-space guidance and mark the priorities by zone.

Step 2

Priority plan

Immediate hazards first (Zone 0 and dead fuel), then structured thinning outward - phased to your budget if needed.

Step 3

Clear & thin

Ladder fuels removed, brush spaced, litter cleared. We chip and haul; we do not leave slash piles as new fuel.

Step 4

Maintenance schedule

We set a recurring visit - typically spring and again mid-summer - to keep the property defensible.

Good To Know

Frequently Asked Questions

What is defensible space?

Defensible space is the buffer you create by managing vegetation around a building so a wildfire slows, drops to the ground, and can be safely fought. Arizona guidance uses zones: 0-5 feet (non-combustible), 5-30 feet (lean, clean and green), and 30-100+ feet (reduced and spaced fuel). The immediate 0-5 foot zone matters most.

Do you follow Firewise or a specific standard?

Yes. We work to Firewise USA and Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management defensible-space recommendations, and we are familiar with Prescott-area and Yavapai County requirements. If your HOA or fire district has a specific spec, bring it and we will build to it.

Will this help with my homeowners insurance?

Often, yes. Many carriers in Northern Arizona now require or reward defensible space, and some will reinstate or discount a policy after documented mitigation. We can provide before/after photos and a scope summary for your insurer.

How often does defensible space need to be redone?

Plan on light maintenance every year and a heavier pass every 2-3 years. Grass and fine fuels regrow annually; brush and needle cast build up fast. We offer recurring maintenance so you do not have to track it.

Can you do firebreaks on larger acreage and ranch land?

Yes - we are heavy-equipment capable and cut fuelbreaks along fence lines, ridgelines and access roads for ranches, HOAs and commercial parcels.
